By: Jose Isaacson Clay S. Chournos, Vice-Principal at Bear River High School, spent most of his early summers herd counting with his father. Mr. Chournos spent nights in a small tent and his days on horseback counting sheep. One day, after the usual sheep counting, Mr. Chournos and his father started off to base camp. His father’s horse was young and rather jumpy, so it made the ride back somewhat rough. On top of that, his father's bridle broke so he had to use the halter.
His father being quite experience with horses, saw these things as minor inconveniences: the real trouble came after. Mr. Chournos and his father were on a trail right next to a small creek when in the distance they noticed a bear. The bear quickly turned towards them and started to charge. Mr. Chournos said that he didn't know what to do and that he was scared and worried. Luckily, his dad started to scream and yell at the bear. The bear immediately stopped and “sat like a dog.”. After the bear stopped, it whimpered, then proceeded to run back to where it came from. The bear they encountered was young and still had room to grow. After the incident was over, Mr. Chournos and his father just laughed it off but in the moment it was seriously scary for a twelve-year-old, Mr. Chournos. He said that the bear must have just come down to get a drink from the creek when it encountered them. Af first, the bear had barely noticed them, but was then startled by their presence. Mr. Chournos said this story was just one of the many crazy experiences he had during his summers of herd counting.

By: Hollis Barlow Most students know Mrs. Braquel Brinkerhoff as the positive, supportive teacher in room 2009; however, most of us don't know her story from when she was also a high schooler. It was a chilly January day, Mrs. Brinkerhoff was a sixteen-year-old girl in the Brigham City 20th ward. She needed to use the restroom so she quietly left. When she was heading back to class, she didn't want to interrupt and loudly enter, so she opened the door slightly and slid in rear first. Little did she know that when she went to the restroom she had a wardrobe malfunction. Her skirt had gotten tucked into her leggings and had exposed her behind. So rather than being small and quiet, the scene became quite large and comical. Everyone in the room noticed Mrs. Brinkerhoff sliding in. The situation wasn’t as bad as it might sound. The people in the room were laughing with Mrs. Brinkerhoff rather than at her and they weren't mean. But to say the least, the moment was quite embarrassing. Mrs. Brinkerhoff's face showed her embarrassment as she became super red and flushed.
Now that this embarrassing moment has long since passed, Mrs. Brinkerhoff can see how it produced an entertaining and comical story. In reference to the story, Mrs. Brinkerhoff said, “It’s good to be able to laugh at yourself and not take life too seriously.”Mrs. Brinkerhoff’s perspective is an extremely good way to look at and handle embarrassing moments. Hopefully if there's anything to take away from this story, it is that sometimes embarrassing things can lead to funny and entertaining stories. Embarrassing situations can suck in the moment, but they can lead to great stories to tell in the future. At the time, you may also feel that no one can relate, but we’ve all had our moments, even our teachers and administrators. |
